Goats return to Xàbia as a natural tool for forest fire prevention and maintenance of natural spaces

Xàbia, 17/09/26.-

Xàbia Town Hall resumes the ecological grazing initiative launched at the beginning of the year as a natural tool for forest fire prevention and the maintenance of natural spaces.

A total of

250 goats

return to this area of the municipality to continue with the work of reducing vegetation and the load of plant fuel, especially in those areas close to the urban-forest interface, where prevention is especially important to improve the safety of homes and the population.

This action gives continuity to the pilot test started in January, which allowed verifying the benefits of controlled grazing as a forest management method. Livestock contributes naturally to keeping vegetation clear, reducing the accumulation of biomass and at the same time favouring the maintenance of ecosystems.

The Town Hall thus commits to continuing a formula that combines

fire prevention, sustainability and recovery of traditional practices

, using livestock itself as a land management tool.

Grazing is carried out in a planned manner and under supervision, following at all times the indications and criteria established by the Montgó Natural Park. The goats do not access especially sensitive areas, such as flora micro-reserves and other spaces where protected species are found, guaranteeing the conservation of these enclaves.

The initiative is coordinated by Xàbia Town Hall, Creama and the Montgó Natural Park, together with the livestock sector, and forms part of the municipal strategy to reinforce prevention work throughout the year.

With the return of the 250 goats, Xàbia continues to advance in a forest management model based on natural and sustainable solutions, which allows the mountain to be kept cared for and to act on one of the main factors of fire propagation: the accumulation of vegetation.

The Town Hall will continue studying the application of this grazing system in other areas of the municipal term, complementing it with the forest and cleaning works carried out by the different administrations and emergency services.
